Few people take it seriously, but backing up your computer files is more important in 2016 than ever before, and will only be more so in the future. (Jim Martin, How to back up your PC, laptop, phone and tablet for free | Keep your files safe by making copies, March 9th, 2016, https://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/software/how-back-up-your-pc-laptop-phone-tablet-photos-files-3356160/ ).  From college students and the small business owner to IT professional who should know better, many people are under the impression or illusion their laptop, desktop computer or network system will never break, be compromised or hacked.

Recently I wrote about Wardriving, Cantennas, and Ransomware (see my August and September blog posts).  In those posts I demonstrated these threats are real and provided some solutions to prevent them.

But at the end of the day, assuming you do everything in your power to prevent a malware threat, hack, or take such good care of your computer it sparkles, if you lose your data, device, or network you have NOTHING UNLESS IT IS BACKED UP!  I’ll add, and when it is backed up, where is the password stored to access the back up?  Hopefully not in a device locked up!

Back Up your Data like Invoices VS Recreating or Remembering a Year of Lost Data.

Consider this real life scenario for a minute; what would you do if your small businesses computer or network was infected with a virus locking up all your files and couldn’t be fixed?  How would you know how much money somebody owes you and how much you owe others?  Most people square these things up with a receipt or invoice.  But, if you can’t find a saved copy, then what?  Take it a step further, say you use a third party accounting software like QuickBooks.  “Yes!” you think, “I can just login to QuickBooks to see what somebody owes me.”  Think again.  What if all the passwords you keep are stored in a nice Excel spreadsheet which is one of the files that is locked up?  Of course, you can get a password reset.  But, consider the time investment doing this for 15 other accounts then, from online banking to your website login or Google account, which in most organizations nobody knows who to contact after they are created and when they need to be accessed.  The point here is it is not just data that needs to be backed up, but everything, including passwords for all the things your business and life has contact with.
