Dual Monitors Increase Productivity.
Yikes! It’s Tuesday and the work is already stacking up on you. You ask yourself, how am I ever going to get all this done? There has to be a better way. Guess what, there is! You could improve your efficiency by up to 50% or slash 2.5 hours per day by simply adding another display.
Many case studies have concluded that dual monitor setups increase productivity. Microsoft found that a second monitor can boost productivity by 50% when it comes to tasks like copying and pasting. The University of Utah conducted similar studies and found that the size of the monitor contributed to the speed at which people completed tasks. The study used three configurations: one with an 18-inch, one with a 24-inch and one with two 20-inch monitors. In this study they found that individuals who used a single 24-inch screen, completed task 52% faster than people who used single 18-inch monitors. The people with dual screens were 44% more faster than the individuals that used the single screen.
With a single display every time you bring up a new application or window your eyes need to reorient themselves. This can add up to 2.5 hours per day when using a single 24” display. I don’t even want to think about what it would be like with an 18” or 20” display! It would probably be around 4 hours per day you’re messing around, moving applications, re-sizing windows, flipping back and forth and investing more mental activity into operating the PC then the actual task you’re attempting to complete.
Do you use multiple applications at work to complete your tasks? With dual monitors you have plenty of real estate to have your email up, your corporate communication app (Lync, Yammer, etc.), and other applications simultaneously. This type of configuration maximizes efficiency by minimizing flipping back and forth through applications when copying and pasting, referencing materials, browsing the internet etc. It also helps you focus on what’s in front of you. You ever find yourself doing something completely different because something caught your attention when working online. Before you know it an hour has gone by before you catch yourself and get back what you were supposed to be working on. Dual monitors can really improve this because the application is still open on the other display. You’re more likely to return to an open application than one that’s hidden in the foreground of a single monitor setup.
When setting up a dual monitor workstation please consider pairing similar displays with identical resolutions. If you don’t, it can mess with the transition from one display to the next because the applications need to be re-sized to accommodate a different resolution. Also, confirm you have an additional monitor hookup on your PC or laptop. If you do not than you would need to get an internal or external video card to support the additional display.
