Does your computer take a few seconds to catch up to your clicks or keystrokes? Is it slow to startup? Does it seem sluggish and take forever to retrieve a doc? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. RB’s Computer Service works with slow computers every day of the week. Although every computer is a little different, the slowness is usually due to spyware, lack of RAM or your computer could need a Solid-State Drive. RB’s Computer Service can often solve this problem quickly for consumers and business owners.
What is Spyware, RAM, and Solid-State Drives (SSD)?
Random-Access Memory (or simply RAM), is the memory or information storage in a computer that is used to store running programs and data for the programs. Data (information) in the RAM can be read and written quickly in any order. Normally, the Random-Access Memory is in the form of computer chips. Wikipedia
The one additional feature RAM does is it allows your computer to do more things at one time, effectively making it appear faster. If you use your desktop with multiple tabs open and run multiple Windows Office programs at the same time, it is the RAM that makes it seem faster.
Spyware
Spyware is a software program that aims to gather information about a person or an organization, sometimes without their knowledge and sends the gathered information to another entity without the consumer's consent. Wikipedia
Some Spyware can change computer settings, which can result in slow internet connection speeds, unauthorized changes in the browser settings or changes to software settings. As a result, your computer may take a few extra clicks or keystrokes to catch up with your next command. Sometimes it “feels” like a RAM issue, but more than likely it is someone gathering information from your computer without your consent.
Solid-State Drives (SSD)
A Solid-State Drives is a solid-state storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies to store data consistently, typically using flash memory and functioning as secondary storage in the hierarchy of computer storage. Wikipedia
An apple to apple speed comparison between a standard hard drive and a Solid-State Drive is tricky for a variety of reasons, but conventional wisdom holds that SSD’s are 5 to 10 times faster, sometimes 100 times faster. I have written several blogs about this. To learn more click, https://rbsmn.com/do-yourself-a-solid-5-benefits-of-a-solid-state-drive.
As I mentioned above, Spyware sometimes “feels” like a RAM issue. If your computer is getting slower, we recommended you bring it into RB’s Computer Service to investigate and find a solution. While RAM is replaceable, a stolen identity is not. Spyware could and often does lead to theft of some kind, with the user unwittingly providing the keys to get in.
