Storage for 20 Million songs, 20,000 DVDs
Computer storage technology has progressed by leaps and bounds in the last few years. Gone are the days when you would wait for a considerable amount of time during the loading of large applications, like video or Netflix. The startup time for modern computers has reduced to a few countable seconds. All this has become possible with modern Solid State Drives (SSDs). The ExaDrive DC100 SSD by Nimbus Data is a game changer in terms SSD speed. With ExaDrive DC100 we have now reached unfathomable capacities. With 100TB (terabyte), “it's enough storage for more than 20 million songs, or the equivalent to around 20,000 DVDs (Staff Writer, PC Authority, This SSD has more storage capacity than 20,000 DVDs, March 21st, 2018, https://www.pcauthority.com.au/news/this-ssd-has-more-storage-capacity-than-20000-dvds-487440).” If speed is what you want, RB’s Computer Service can help you swap out your old hard drive or slower SSD for the fastest one.
What is SSD (Solid State Drive)?
Both SSDs and hard drives do the same thing: They boot your system, and store your applications and personal files. (Joel Santo Domingo, PCMag, SSD vs. HDD: What’s the Difference?, June 9, 2017, https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2404258,00.asp). SSDs cost more than hard drives in terms of dollar per gigabyte. Fortunately, the manufacturer of ExaDrive DC100 advertises that it will have the lowest operating costs and would recover its additional price within its use period (Wong, Raymond, Mashable, Nimbus Data announces world's largest 3.5-inch SSD with 100TB storage, March 28, 2018, https://mashable.com/2018/03/20/nimbus-data-worlds-largest-100tb-ssd/#Z7sJRGMqQmqg
General Benefits of an SSD
ExaDrive DC100 is a 100 TB capacity solid state drive, from Nimbus Data in a 3.5” form. As a result, speed is the first thing people often think of in the context of an SSD. But, an SSD is also a storage medium which does not have any moving parts. Such a drive connects to the traditional SATA interface, but removes the problems that are associated with electromechanical storage devices. They use non-volatile electronic storage, which can retain data, even when the device is without power, allowing its use as permanent data storage.
4 Benefits of ExaDrive DC100
ExaDrive DC100 is full of advantages, especially for server applications and cloud computing. Here are some amazing benefits of switching to SSD:
- The 100 TB capacity is a top benefit, since it offers the highest storage capacity of all existing enterprise storage SSDs.
- The efficiency of this SSD is amazing, as it provides excellent storage in a small space, allowing the effective use of the available space, making it easy to swap out an old hard drive or slower SSD.
- This SSD is compatible with the existing network storage areas. You do not need to install new cabinets for implementing this drive in the datacenter.
- It uses extremely little power, which may reach the level of 0.1 Watts/TB of storage. This is great when it is implemented in large storage setups, where power is an important concern. The Competition
The ExaDrive DC100 faces competition from a number of products, from companies like Samsung, Toshiba and Seagate. The various drives from these manufacturers are cheaper, but when compared according to their capacity, the Nimbus Data product matches well with the competitors. However, it defeats the competition by a fair margin, when it comes to the operating costs, as it boasts the record of using 85% lower power level.
It also becomes a market leader since it is compatible with all existing systems. Unlike Samsung’s PM1643, it has a 3.5” form factor, which is excellent for use with the existing datacenter racks. Remember, good SSDs are more expensive than traditional hard drives and the ExaDrive DC100 will be no different in this regard. However, the manufacturer advertises that it will have the lowest operating costs and would recover its additional price within its use period (Wong, Raymond, Mashable, Nimbus Data announces world's largest 3.5-inch SSD with 100TB storage, March 28, 2018, https://mashable.com/2018/03/20/nimbus-data-worlds-largest-100tb-ssd/#Z7sJRGMqQmqg).
The Average Price
The ExaDrive DC100 is certainly not going to be the least expensive option for speed. However, it will have a comparable price to other top competitors like Samsung, when we break it down in terms price per TB of storage. The current standards are anywhere between $450 and $600 per TB (survey on prices on Google). We will know more about the monetary details of the product as it becomes readily available for commercial use from Nimbus Data.
