Let’s face it, without Microsoft I could not run my business the way I do. My daughter would not have been able to complete her school work when she was in school. Microsoft is, has and will be an integral partner in my business operations and life. But, the Windows10 Automatic Upgrade is causing controversy because people are reporting (from reputable sources), they cannot opt-out of it, even though they follow Microsoft’s opt-out procedure. The automatic upgrade happens anyway. Microsoft has been busy urging and sending out notifications to its Windows 7 and 8.1 customers (see screen shot on this page) to upgrade their PC to Windows 10 by July 29th to get the version for free (presumably they will be charging after that date).
To be fair to Microsoft, here is what they are saying at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3095675 ;
- Automatic Upgrade. The default pop-up notification is a pre-determined date and time set by Microsoft and will be automatically performed on your PC. To confirm the date and time, Microsoft says you should click the “Ok” button (See screen shot on this page). You can change the date and time, but to do so go to Microsoft’s support page; https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3095675 .
- Upgrade on the spot, “Now.” Instead of waiting for the scheduled time, the other option is to “Upgrade Now.” (See screen shot on this page).
- Opt-out. To opt-out you cannot just click/exit out of the pop-up. By simply clicking on the “X” in the upper right hand corner to exit out of the pop-up will not opt you out, but maintain the pre-set scheduled upgrade time. You need to click the message right below the scheduled date and time, “Click here to change upgrade schedule or cancel upgrade,” and follow the prompts. (See screen shot on this page or go to https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3095675 ). In this sense, it is like you need to opt-in in order to opt-out. In other words, you need to take action by clicking the message versus “exiting” the pop-up dialogue box. The problem is, even after numerous people have done this, they are reporting they cannot opt-out.
The controversy is really about control and timing.
Like most Microsoft updates and upgrades, there are immediate fans and critics for a variety of reasons. Most critics are those that don’t want any type of disruption in how they use Microsoft. They don’t have time to watch a tutorial or spend 30 minutes adjusting to new or enhanced features. Still others may be using Microsoft in tandem with other network systems and software (Quick Books), and an upgrade to one means an upgrade to all.
